A WiFi Solution To Geotagging

Posted in Photgraphic Equipment with tags , , , on June 7, 2010 by dclt01

I came aross this article; CNET Article: Geotag your photos without wires or fuss written by Josh Lowensohn. The method makes use of the Eye-Fi card with its built in Wi-Fi capability. While storing the picture on the card, it grabs the GPS data from a GPS device to which it is linked wirelessly. While I have not personally attempted this myself it appears to have a number This has a number of attractions:

  1. The GPS data is stored with the photograph as soon as it is taken. This is simple and requires no post processing as with other solutions such as the one I wrote about using the I-GotU data logger
  2. You do need a GPS device with Wi-Fi capability. The writer used his Wi-Fi enabled mobile phone

This is a neat solution primarily because it is done there and then. No post processing to get the GPS data saved on the photograph. The only reservation I have is the need to have a GPS device for the solution to work. On the other hand the I-GotU type solutions suffer from having to do post processing to get the photographs geotagged.

Nikon have a good solution which is a GPS device that is inserted into your flash hot shoe. The drawback is the $400 price tag. So unless you own one of the few cameras in the market that have an in-built GPS or unless you are happy to pay for a specialised unit like that Nikon GPS unit there is unfortunately no less cumbersome way around it yet but I am sure something is surely round the corner

A Sunset In Darwin

Darwin is one of those places that seems like it is far away for most Australians even though it is in the northern end of the continent. Arriving early in the morning, I spent the most of the day exploring down town Darwin and believe it me it was hot reaching over 35c by mid afternoon. So as dusk approached and it started to cool down, I made my way down to the Esplanade to be greeted by this glorious Darwin sunset

This must be one of the most unusual flowers I have ever come across. This tree was in the Darwin Botanic Gardens in the Northern Territory. The tree got its name from its fruit which, no guesses, looks like a canon ball.

Aura Vale Lake

Aura Vale Lake is just 30 kms south east of Melbourne. It is just a 10 minute drive my place in the green expanse at the foothills of the Dandenong ranges. On this visit the water was very still and this ripple occurred when a lone kayak rider paddled by.

This one was the view of the lake from under a clump of native trees on the banks of the lake

I liked this shot because of the reflection off the water and a bit of the Australian dry autumn colours coming through

The wet season in the Northern Territory of Australia is the time of the year when noon temperatures soar to 35C and humidity is over 90%. But there is water everywhere and torrential rains almost every afternoon. With the big wet lilies come into bloom and dot all the wetlands in the region.

I was strolling in the main market in Yangon in Myanmar when I came across this lady by the street selling iced water chilled by pouring water over a piece of ice.

Geo Tagging With Your Nokia Mobile Phone

Posted in Photgraphic Equipment with tags , , , , on February 24, 2010 by dclt01

I previously wrote a piece about geo tagging with an I-GotU device. The device came with a piece of software called @trip for the PC which worked in conjunction with the device which tagged photographs uploaded with the software to your PC. I recently discovered that they also offered versions for Symbion, Windows Mobile and Java enabled mobile phones.

Since I have a GPS enabled Nokia E71, I decided to download and install the Symbion version from their @trip download site . Installation using the standard way for installing any application on your Nokia phone was simple and straight forward. Once installed you simply start up the application on your phone and it starts to track your journey logging waypoints on your mobile phone.

Any photographs you take while the application is active will be geo tagged automatically when you end the trip. If you sign up for a free account on their website www.a-trip.com you can then upload both the trip details and the photographs directly from the application running on your mobile phone. It all works quite simply and I had no problems with it whatsover.

This is great for geo tagging photographs taken with your mobile phone. I haven’t quite worked out how best to use the application to geo tag photographs that are not taken with the mobile phone. The easiest way I have found to do this is to upload the trip to your account on their website. Then download the trip to the @trip application on your PC and import the photographs from your hard drive that you previosuly downloaded from your camera card. This geo tags the photographs in the same manner as if you had been using the I-GotU device. As I said there may be simpler workflow to do this but I need to play around more with it to find out more.
